A bold continuation in a series of double a-side single releases from Kayla Painter.

Painter, supported through Gilles Peterson's talent development program, Future Bubblers, continues feeding her audience enticing tracks, produced with precision and pushing beyond the boundaries of experimentation.

These tracks give yet another glimpse into this artist's rich interior landscape. The terrain may be familiar to those who have witnessed the show stopping AV performance. However, this release adds another dimension of darkness, shadows and unease to the Kayla Painter world.

‘Prey at Night’ explores an alternative future through Painters’ lens. Drawing on horror cinema aesthetics (Climax, Neon Demon, Raw) she creates overbearing tension whilst leading the listener deeper into the darkness of the track.

Blood Orange Beach follows with aesthetic influences of a reimagined future from the late 80s. Using influences from Detroit techno, whilst maintaining a dark edge coupled with light relief of airy synths.

REALLY wish I'd subscribed sooner to be able to enjoy this on vinyl! Curious the artist cited 12 Monkeys and not La Jetee as one of the key inspirations. For me, this has a more somber, introspective and timeless feel more akin to La Jetee than 12 Monkeys (though I also am a big fan of Terry Gilliam). Gorgeous music and you get the bonus of a list of excellent movies to enjoy (another note to the artist: Time Crimes is also a good film to watch). Now to somehow procure a vinyl copy...
