about

Following the release of ‘Pack Your Bivouac’ and ‘Through the Forest’, (supported by Nemone, Tom Ravenscroft, Adam Walton, Georgia Ruth and Bethan Elfyn BBC Radio Wales) producer Kayla Painter, championed by Gilles Peterson (and supported through his talent development program) releases her second double A side single this year, 'Precipitation’ and ‘On the Horizon' releases 14th June.

With 'Precipitation' hinting towards the dance floor, and 'On the Horizon' delving further into challenging territory, this double A side explores two sides of production Painter is known for: meticulous beat work and attention to detail. 'Precipitation' is built around one short sample of brown parcel tape which she has cut, spliced and placed to make a rhythmical dancing top line, reminiscent of Matmos, paired with a newfound interest in hardware synthesisers.

'On the Horizon' is a track created exclusively from alto saxophone, which was the first instrument Painter learnt to play. The producer has previously buried saxophone samples in her other works (‘Sentimental Swagger’) but this track is bold and focuses on tone, recorded using a rich mic set up. ‘On the Horizon’ draws from Colin Stetson and Tim Hecker whilst also forging its own ground in textured drone.
